Water softener over time can cause mineral buildup and in return can make your device to malfunction. Therefore it is necessary to clean the brine tank of your water softener unit once every year, and sometimes twice a year, depending upon the mineral buildup in the tank. And though it might seem like a mammoth task, to begin with, the cleaning process is fairly simple and doesn’t take much time at all.

So simply follow the step-by-step instructions on how to clean your water softeners brine tank:

Step 1: Put your water softener system into the “bypass mode” so that the water can bypass the softener for a short interval of time, in order to facilitate the cleaning.

Step 2: Disconnect all the lines and hoses connecting the water softener unit with the brine tank.

Step 3: Now expel the water out of the brine tank and dump it somewhere away from the plant’s as high percentage of sodium in the expelled out water might harm the plants or nearby grass.

Step 4: Now remove any remaining salt left in the tank.

Step 5: Sometimes there might be a huge block of salt, refer to as the salt bridge, in the brine tank. Here you must use hot water to loosen this block of salt and then break it and discard it.

Step 6: If your brine tank has a brine grid, a platform or screen at the bottom of the tank, pull it out before cleaning the tank.

Step 7: Now take 1-2 gallons of clean water and add few tablespoons of dish soap in it to create a soapy mixture.

Step 8: Take this soapy mixture and pour it into the brine tank and using a long-handled brush scrub the insides of tank thoroughly. After scrubbing, dump the soap-water mixture and rinse the tank.

Step 9: Now pour in 2-3 gallons of clean water in the brine tank and add a quarter cup of household bleach to it. Stir the water and leave the bleach-water solution inside the tank for 15-20 minutes. Then scrub again the insides of a tank using a brush and chlorine water.

Step 10: Once the scrubbing is done, dump the water and rinse the tank again with clean water.

Step 11: Now put the brine tank back in its place and connect all the lines and hoses like before. Bring the system out of the “bypass mode” now.

Step 12: Now add around 5 gallons of clean water and the recommended amount of water softener salts in the brine tank.

And that’s all the steps you need to follow to clean the brine tank and get it working like new again. Here is our recommended site for you which will help you to find the best water softener of 2016-17.
